Introduction to Nepal's Dhami

Introduction to Nepal's Dhami - Jhankri Shamanism

April 3 – April 5, 2026

Clophill, Bedford, United Kingdom

Nepal's shamanism is a living tradition that has been in perennial flow for a long time—it is a way of life for many communities and groups. During this three-day program, participants will actively learn cosmology, the events of the universe's creation, and the causes of disharmony and malaise from the traditional understanding of the Nepali Jhankri-shaman.

Under the exclusive guidance of Bhola Banstola, a 27th-generation Dhami-Jankri Shaman with over 30 years of experience, participants will embark on a journey of discovery.

Participants will learn about the male and female spirits of the Dhyangro drum. This sacred instrument plays a significant role in shamanic rituals. They will understand the primordial sound and the rhythms it produces, and how the spirits of Purusha and Prakriti work in unison—the union of opposites — to bring healing and harmony. The Jhankri uses unique rhythms from the Dhyangro drum in their work.

During the retreat, Bhola will guide you in exploring the practical aspects of Dhami - Jhankri shamanism, providing hands-on learning experiences. You will actively learn about the elements of the shaman's costume (Jala-mala, Jama - Pagari), the traditional way an altar (Thaan) is prepared and the art of making offerings (Chadaunu).

Conventional perspectives on disease and illness will be discussed, and you will have an opportunity to invoke the water deity Jala Devi to create healing water. This comprehensive program ensures that you will leave with a deep understanding of Dhami - Jhankri shamanism.

Prepare to be profoundly transformed during this retreat. A healing mandala (Rekhii) will be designed with cosmic representations, and participants will perform healing rituals of 'letting go' and 'removal' as Khadga Puja. A spiritual cleansing and dancing ritual, a Shamanic Dance of Transformation (Jhankri-Naach) follows the Khadga Puja, promising a profound shift in your spiritual journey. On Saturday evening, we will share a vegetarian meal, after which Bhola will lead a fire ceremony —a ritual of release and reinvigoration, promising a profound shift in your spiritual journey.

To conclude the retreat, Bhola will impart a five-coloured thread (Pancha-Rangi Dhago) blessing of harmony, balance, and joy. This thread symbolises the unity of the five elements. It is believed to raise the life forces for protection (Siir Uthaunu), a ritual that enhances the participants' spiritual strength and resilience.
